Saving electricity is a win-win for everyone – economical for you, green for the environment. That is why no one doubts whether it is worth doing, but the real question is: how to effectively save electricity? We present you with current and practical methods along with a handful of additional tips.
Electricity – how to save money and not go crazy?
A common mistake is a sudden change in the entire functioning at home on impulse, which unfortunately quickly leads to burnout, because who is able to think about new rules all day? If you want to save money in your home, start with one or two changes to start with and only when they become part of your blood, get down to the next ones. How to save electricity at home is only systematic and long-term – this is the best advice to start with.
Number one in the ranking: the kitchen
How to save electricity in an apartment? The easiest way to start is with the kitchen: this is where the biggest power guzzler is located, i.e. the induction or electric stove. In addition, a dishwasher, a refrigerator, an oven… There is room to make changes!
Cook everything covered. It takes much longer for water to boil (and thus consumes more electricity) when the heat from the pot escapes due to the lack of a lid.
Only turn on the dishwasher when it is full. If you can’t wait, use programs that are economical or dedicated to only half of the equipment (many devices have this mode – check the instructions on how to turn it on).
Put well-cooled food in the fridge and freezer – recooling the equipment consumes a lot of electricity, and it costs nothing to keep a hot dish longer at room temperature.
Pour as much water as you need into your electric kettle – any unnecessary supply is an additional energy cost.
If you’re washing by hand, soak and scrub dishes with the water turned off – heating up hot water that drips for minutes is a considerable cost if you use electricity to heat the water.
Don’t open the oven while baking – try to use the glass if you need to check something, because even a single opening will cause heat loss.
Bathroom – how to save electricity when bathing?
The second highest electricity consumption — unless you heat water with gas — is the bathroom. How can you save electricity in this room?
Shorter showers save hot water – i.e. electricity – and your precious time! In addition, choose a shower instead of a bathtub.
Turn on the washing machine when it is full, or choose special programs for a small amount of laundry.
Use the eco-friendly modes, not just for washing small quantities of clothes – check if your washing machine has them and choose them as often as possible. Also remember that you rarely need to wash clothes at high temperatures.
Choose to spin at a lower speed – it saves both electricity and clothes that will last longer. And how much easier (and shorter) ironing will be!
How to save electricity in other parts of the house?
One of the most frequently chosen ways to save electricity is to turn off the lights – along with other items related to lighting.
Turn off the light when you leave the room. It often happens that such matters are forgotten, and when we illuminate several rooms at once, electricity consumption increases unnecessarily.
Use energy-efficient light bulbs – on the one hand, replacing light bulbs generates a cost, but it is one-time and will bring significant savings in the long run.
Take advantage of daylight. Arrange the rooms in your home so that sunny days replace lighting for many works as often as possible, e.g. place your desk by the window and not in the corner of the room.
And finally, two additional tips on how you can save electricity at home:
Unplug chargers! The fact is that the new chargers do not consume that much power without the equipment connected, but it is not zero. Add together every phone used in a given house, usually several laptops, wireless headphones, tablets, wireless mice… The conclusion is obvious.
If you’re not sure you’re going away for a short while, don’t use standby mode – turn it off completely. There are exceptions to this if restarting consumes more power than standby for up to several hours (check the specifications of your devices), but in most cases turning off devices plugged in overnight will be a significant saving.
